Ready for real learning

You want your five-year-old to start school with confidence and a love of learning. Kindergarten at SFC is a full-day academic program, building strong foundations for the elementary years in small classes where teachers know your child.

Classes hold 12 to 20 children, taught by Mrs. Adams.

What your child learns

Kindergartners study Bible, reading, phonics, math, Heritage Studies, science, art, music, and Spanish. Bible is its own subject, and a Biblical worldview runs through all of them.

By the end of the year, your child is ready for first grade. Over the year, kindergartners:

  • Learn that letters make sounds, with the main sound of every consonant and the short and long vowel sounds.
  • Read their first 25 sight words.
  • Count to 100 by ones, tens, and fives, and recognize and write the numbers to 100.
  • Add small numbers, with sums up to ten.
  • Name shapes, including the square, circle, triangle, rectangle, and hexagon.

A day in kindergarten

School begins at 8:00 am and dismisses at 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Each day opens with a morning meeting: calendar and math, the pledges, and a Bible story. After snack come math, reading and phonics, handwriting, and music, then time at the park before lunch. After lunch the class settles in with a read-aloud and a nap. The afternoon is for science, Heritage Studies, Spanish, or art.

Joining kindergarten

Your child must be five years old by December 1 of the school year to enter Kindergarten. Children applying to Kindergarten complete a kindergarten readiness assessment as part of the admissions process. It checks that your child can recognize uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers from 1 to 20 and beyond, colors, and shapes; count by ones, fives, and tens; finish a pattern; name the days of the week and months of the year; make animal sounds; cut with scissors; and recognize and write their own name. Children in Kindergarten Beginnings move straight up to Kindergarten without it.

Families already at SFC and siblings of current students receive enrollment priority. Once your child is enrolled, our Continuous Enrollment keeps them enrolled through graduation.

Start with a tour, then follow the steps to apply.

Graduation and first grade

The year ends with kindergarten graduation, in caps and gowns, an early milestone your family will remember. From here your child moves into first grade and the rest of our elementary program.
